Laverne "Vern" Aldrich, age 93 of Wrightstown, formerly of Rose City and Alexandria, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at the Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena.
Memorial services were held Saturday, September 16, 2006, at the Wrightstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Hager officiating. Music was provided by pianist Kathleen Schwartz-Dahl, and the church choir. Burial took place at Woodside Cemetery in Wrightstown Township.
Laverne Adin Aldrich was born on December 27, 1912, in Otter Tail County, to Herbert and Margaret (Perkins) Aldrich. He graduated from Bertha High School and went to work as a wholesale delivery truck driver for Steinkraus Distributors.
On October 6, 1935, Laverne was married to Dorothy Scharf at the Wrightstown United Methodist Church parsonage. Laverne worked at his father-in-law's car dealership, Scharf Chevrolet Garage in Wadena for a time and then Laverne and Dorothy operated the Aldrich Mercantile in Rose City for 27 years. When they moved to Lake Latoka in Alexandria in 1963, Vern worked as a school custodian and locksmith. They lived in Sauk Centre and Parkers Prairie before moving to Wadena.
Vern was a very active church volunteer and was a member of the Wrightstown United Methodist Church. Some of his hobbies and interests included bowling, hunting, fishing, flying and working on small gas engines, such as lawn mowers and snowmobiles. He enjoyed traveling, camping, family croquet matches and playing the dice game Bunco. He was a kind and loving father and grandpa who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Laverne is survived by his daughters Joann Benesh of Roseville and Sandra Kalina of Glenwood, four grandchildren Sherryl Zimmerman, Robin Reimer, Kim Larson and Ken Kalina, and five great-grandchildren, Jessica Zimmerman, Chelsey and Carly Larson, Cameron and Alyeska Reimer.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy who died November 8, 2005, daughter Janice in May of 2003, two great-grandsons Cody & Kyle Zimmerman, a son-in-law Joe Kalina in 1994, sisters Hazel Old and Myrtle Aldrich and brothers Paul, Kenneth, Renold and Stanley Aldrich.
